High School Basketball: Central Catholic rallies for win

Central Catholic trailed by 15 after the first quarter, but Sam Calhoun led the Vikings back.

Calhoun scored a career-high 29 points, including the winning 3-pointer with 3 seconds left, to give host Central Catholic (15-5, 11-2) a 79-76 victory against Class AAAA No. 5 Gateway (13-5, 10-3).

The Gators, who beat the Vikings in last season's WPIAL Class AAAA championship and earlier this season, jumped out to a 29-14 lead and still led by nine entering the fourth quarter.

But Calhoun kept his team in the game by hitting six 3-pointers, also a career high. David Urso added 20 for the Vikings.

Deon Cottrell-Baker led Gateway with 18 points and Delvon Randall added 16.

Other top boys games

• Hampton (18-3, 10-3) avenged a 22-point loss to Class AAAA No. 4 Seneca Valley (14-7, 7-6) on Jan. 11 by beating the host Raiders, 64-61, in Section 3. David Huber led the Talbots with 19 points.

• Malik Hooker scored 19 points to lead Class AAAA No. 1 New Castle (20-0, 13-0) to a 74-58 home win against No. 2 North Allegheny (17-2, 11-2) in Section 3.

• Behind 26 points from Maverick Rowan, Class A No. 1 Lincoln Park (16-5, 9-0) completed a season sweep of Class A No. 4 Union (15-4, 6-3) with an 82-58 road victory in Section 1.

• Kevin Scuilli scored all 18 of his points on 3-pointers to lead Class AAA No. 3 Montour (16-4, 9-2) to a 53-49 victory against visiting South Fayette (12-7, 8-3) in Section 5.

Stars of the night

• Zach Herman scored 22 of his 35 points in the first half to lead Class AA No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (19-1, 11-0) to a win against host Serra Catholic (13-6, 6-5), 86-60, in Section 3.

• Spencer Casson had 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks for Class AAA No. 4 Chartiers Valley (18-2, 10-1) in its 85-49 win against visiting South Park (11-9, 6-6) in Section 5.

Milestones

• Senior Danny Savulchak of North Catholic (13-5, 7-2) scored 31 points to give him 1,013 for his career in a 76-60 victory against Quigley Catholic (10-11, 3-6) in Class A Section 2.

• Senior John Wallace of Trinity Christian (7-12, 4-5) has 1,007 career points after scoring 23 in a 68-42 win against Leechburg (7-12, 2-7) in Class A Section 4.

• Senior Gabe Pritz of Peters Township (8-12, 5-8) scored 15 points and eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career in a 42-41 loss to visiting Baldwin (7-14, 3-10) in Class AAAA Section 4.
