Girls basketball highlights: Strong second quarter lifts Gateway to victory

Gateway's girls basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in its final game of 2012. Luckily for the Gators, 2013 began much better.
Jada Epps scored 13 points and Gateway dominated in the second quarter to win at Class AAAA No. 5 Upper St. Clair, 52-43, Thursday in a non-section game.
Trailing, 17-12, after the first quarter, Gateway (6-2) blanked Upper St. Clair (6-3), 11-0, in the second quarter to take a 23-17 halftime lead.
Chelsea Richardson added 12 points for the Gators, whose 50-48 loss at Altoona Friday ended their five-game winning streak.
Upper St. Clair's Madison Serio made three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 14 points.
Other top girls games
• Class AAA No. 3 South Park (9-1, 4-0) quickly rebounded from its first loss, rolling to a 71-34 win against visiting Moon (6-5, 2-1) in Section 5. South Park's Shelby Lindsay scored 22 points, including 10 in the third quarter when the Eagles outscored Moon, 28-8.
• Nicole Johnson scored a game-high 17 points for host Oakland Catholic (3-5, 2-1) in a 43-39 overtime win against visiting Shaler (4-6, 0-3) in Class AAAA Section 3. Shaler rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to force overtime.
• Ali Goetz scored 10 of her 19 points in the second half to help Mars (6-4, 2-0) deal visiting Kittanning (5-5, 3-1) its first Class AAA Section 1 loss, 50-46. Emily Knepshield scored 19 for Kittanning.
• Taylor Thomas scored 26 points to lead a quartet of West Mifflin players scoring in double figures, allowing the host Titans (3-5, 2-0) to beat Belle Vernon (6-3, 2-1), 75-66, in Section 4.
• Kiana Law's 22 points propelled Class AAA No. 4 Central Valley (8-0, 3-0) to a 48-36 win at New Castle (5-5, 1-3) in Section 2. Central Valley fell behind by two points at halftime, before outscoring New Castle, 30-16, in the second half.
• Class A No. 1 Vincentian (9-0, 3-0) scored 60 first-half points on its way to a 77-30 victory against Trinity Christian (1-7, 0-4) in Section 2. Brenna Wise scored all 22 of her points in the first half and added 10 rebounds.
Milestone
• Ambridge's Katie Fischer scored her 1,000-career point and led the Bridgers (6-2, 2-1) to a 57-31 victory at Ellwood City (5-5, 1-3) in Class AAA Section 2. Fischer scored 22 in the game and has 1,019 in her career.
Stars of the night
• Sammie Weiss scored 26 points, including 16 in the second half, to vault McGuffey (8-1, 3-0) into first place in Class AA Section 5 after a 61-40 victory at Charleroi (6-5, 3-1).
• Lauren Wolosik had 33 points to help Class A No. 3 North Catholic (5-4, 4-0) rout visiting Eden Christian (7-3, 2-1), 64-16, in Section 2. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
