Girls Basketball Highlights: Avella needs 2 OTs to down California

It took two extra sessions, but Avella finally outlasted Courtnee McMasters and California.
McMasters had 30 points, including a tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation, but it wasn't enough as Class A No. 5 Avella (9-4, 5-0) eventually came away with a 60-57 double-overtime victory against the visiting Trojans (11-3, 3-2) in Section 3.
Avella trailed by five points entering the fourth quarter, but outscored California, 15-7, before McMasters' 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Olivia English had 17 points, and Julia Carlisle added 13 for Avella.
Other top girls games
• Kristen Jackson scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead Class A No. 4 Quigley Catholic (10-4) to a 72-60 home win against Class AAAA's Franklin Regional. Quigley outscored the Panthers, 21-6, in the final quarter.
• Shelby Lindsay scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 10 assists as Class AAA No. 2 South Park (13-1, 7-0) pulled away from visiting South Fayette (7-5, 4-3), 56-43, in Section 5.
• Madison Caufield scored all 12 of her points on four 3-pointers to lead Oakland Catholic (6-8, 5-1) to a 31-29 victory against visiting Butler (8-8, 4-2) in Class AAAA Section 3. Butler missed a shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
• Taylor Brennan scored 12 points to lead Class AAAA No. 4 North Allegheny (12-2, 6-1) to a 40-36 victory against host Seneca Valley (6-6, 3-4) in Section 3.
Stars of the night
• Taylor Thomas of West Mifflin (6-7, 5-1) scored 18 of her career-high 35 points in the first quarter in a 70-32 victory against Brownsville (5-10, 1-6) in Class AAA Section 4.
• Blackhawk's Halle Denman had nine steals and seven assists to go with her 10 points as the Class AAA No. 1 Cougars (15-0, 7-0) cruised to a 63-21 Section 2 victory against Ellwood City (7-8, 1-6).
• Lauren Wolosik scored 16 of her 30 points in the first quarter to lead Class A No. 3 North Catholic (9-6, 6-1) to a 61-15 victory against Ellis School (4-8, 2-5) in Section 2.
• Aila Bradford scored 29 of Eden Christian's 41 points as the Lady Warriors (10-4, 5-2) took down visiting Trinity Christian (2-10, 0-7), 41-31, in Class A Section 2.
Milestones
• Senior Dana Buck of Class AAA No. 5 Elizabeth Forward (14-1, 6-0) broke the 1,000-point career mark in the Warriors' 65-14 victory against Waynesburg (3-12, 0-7) in Section 4. Buck had 17 points in the contest to give her 1,002 for her career.
• Senior Mason DePetro of Cornell (7-6, 5-2) scored 19 points to give her 1,001 for her career as the Raiders grabbed a 61-8 victory against Western Beaver (0-11, 0-6) in Class A Section 1.
