Uniontown hunts 45th section title

Uniontown is title town.

The Uniontown boys team plays at Greensburg Salem tonight in a game that will likely decide the WPIAL Class AAA Section 3 title.

A Uniontown win will enable the Raiders to add to their unique collection of championship trophies. Uniontown has won 44 section championships, the most in WPIAL history. Washington is second with 43 and Monessen third with 39.

Uniontown won the first game against Greensburg Salem, 53-51, and this one could be close again. Both teams enter the game with two section losses.

Uniontown has clinched a WPIAL playoff spot for a record 57th time.

Top player out

New Castle standout guard Kaylynn Waters is out for the season because of a knee injury.

Waters sustained a torn ACL in her right knee in a recent game against Vincentian. Waters, a senior, was the third-leading scorer in the WPIAL, averaging 25 points a game. A few Division I colleges were showing interest in her.

This is the second year in a row Waters' season has ended because of a knee injury. A year ago, she played only four games because of a torn ACL in her left knee.

Follow the leader

Highlands guard Micah Mason, the WPIAL's scoring leader, believes he is being followed everywhere he goes ... on a basketball court.

Most teams play "junk" defenses against him, and some double-team him for much of the game. It can be frustrating for Mason, and the frustration showed on Mason's "Twitter" account after Sunday's non-section game against West Allegheny when he was held to 16 points. Mason was averaging 29 points heading into the game. A year ago, he averaged 34 a game in the regular season.

Mason tweeted "I was hyped thinking I was gonna go to an exhibition game and them play man but they play two guys on me all game smh [shaking my head]."

Good Knights

Summit Academy is on the verge of making history.

The Knights have a two-game lead in the Class AA Section 2 race. Summit Academy has never won a section title outright since joining the WPIAL in the 1998-99 season. The Knights tied with Neshannock for the section championship a year ago.

Remember him?

West Liberty University has the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division II basketball and the No. 1 scoring team, averaging 100 points a game. A freshman from West Mifflin has had a big impact on the Hilltoppers. C.J. Hester, a 6-foot-4 guard, had recent games of 31 and 29 points and he is fourth on the team in scoring at 13.8 ppg. He also is averaging 7.7 rebounds and shooting 60 percent from the field.
