Bishop Canevin takes WPIAL Class AA Girls' Basketball title

It was a case of Johnie on the spot. And for Bishop Canevin High School girls basketball player Johnie Olkosky, her spot was behind the 3-point line.
Olkosky tied a WPIAL championship game record by making seven 3-pointers to lift Bishop Canevin to a gigantic upset. The Crusaders defeated Seton-LaSalle, 56-47, to win the WPIAL Class AA title tonight at Palumbo Center.
Seton-LaSalle was trying to win its third consecutive championship and the Rebels had won 66 games in a row against WPIAL teams. But Bishop Canevin jumped to an early lead, got a terrific performance from Olkosky and held off a late charge by Seton-LaSalle.
Olkosky tied the 3-point record set in 1999. She finished with 26 points and made 7 of 9 from 3-point range. Carly Forse added 14 points and Celina DiPietro 10.
Naje Gibson and Angela Heintz both scored 16 points for Seton-LaSalle. Shooting was a big key. Bishop Canevin shot 53 percent (20 of 38) from the field and 50 percent (8 of 16) from 3-point range. Seton-LaSalle shot only 38 percent (14 of 37) and was only 1 of 11 from 3-point range.
Bishop Canevin led at halftime, 28-22, behind the strength of four 3-pointers from Olkosky. She hit two more 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the second quarter to put Bishop Canevin ahead, 34-22. Bishop Canevin led, 48-33, after three quarters.
Seton-LaSalle made a run in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 50-45 with 1:37 left, but Olkosky made two free throws seven seconds later and Seton-LaSalle could get no closer than five the rest of the way.
