Neshannock, Ellwood City win WPIAL baseball crowns

Two high school baseball teams from Lawrence County won WPIAL championships today at Consol Energy Park in North Franklin.

In the Class A championship, Neshannock defeated California, 5-0. Earlier in the Class AA final, Ellwood City edged neighboring rival Riverside, 9-7. A third WPIAL championship game is being played tonight between Seneca Valley and Mt. Lebanon.

In the Class AA final, Ellwood City jumped to a 7-1 lead, but had to hold off a Riverside comeback. Riverside cut the lead to 7-6 in the fifth inning. Seth Mley, Anthony Carusone and Gregg Lynn all had two hits for Ellwood City.

In the Class A championship, Alex Strittmatter pitched a complete-game shutout to give Neshannock its second consecutive title. Strittmatter pitched a five-hitter and struck out 10. The game was scorless after three innings before Neshannock scored single runs in the fourth and fifth before adding three in the sixth.
