Joe Colella, Hopewell High School baseball coach, dies

Joe Colella, who coached Hopewell High School and Hopewell American Legion baseball teams for almost 50 years, died Sunday. He was 80.

Hopewell athletic director Don Short said the cause of death has not been released. Colella coached Hopewell's high school and American Legion teams for 48 years. He coached both teams this past season and guided the high school team to the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals. He won a WPIAL title in 2010.

Colella was inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame in June.

On the high school and America Legion levels combined, he won more than 1,600 games -- 660 as the high school coach and more than 950 on the American Legion level.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by John Syka Funeral Home in Ambridge.
