High School Athletes of the Week: Lauren Mayernik of Avonworth, Brandon Camic of Serra Catholic
Share with others:
Last week: A senior forward, Mayernik had a combined 57 points in easy victories against Freedom and Northgate to improve the Antelopes to 10-3 and up her season average to 23.9 points per game.
Check this out: The team's captain and only senior, Mayernik surpassed 1,000 career points earlier this season and is on the verge of becoming the third player in school history to reach 1,000 rebounds. Mayernik is also a four-year starter at middle hitter for the Avonworth volleyball team that was WPIAL runner-up this season. She has a senior class-leading 4.23 GPA, and her sister, MacKenzie, is a sophomore in her second season starting on the basketball team.
• Which do you enjoy playing more, volleyball or basketball? I love both. I can't decide.
• What did surpassing 1,000 points mean to you? It's such an amazing accomplishment, what I've worked for my whole high school career. But I have to give all the credit to my teammates and coaches.
• Does your sister have a chance to pass you in career points someday? If she keeps going like she is now, it's possible.
• Are the two of you at all competitive with each other? Yeah, our one-on-one games get pretty intense. But in games, we feed off each other. I always know where she is and vice versa.
• Having an antelope as a team mascot -- cool or uncool? Ummmm ... I have to justify this a little bit ... (long pause) ... I'm going to say cool because they're agile and can be vicious.

Last week: Camic scored 33 points, including the 1,000th of his career, in Serra's 91-52 win against Geibel last week.
The skinny: Camic is averaging a WPIAL Class A-best 25 points per game. A 6-foot-5 guard/forward, Camic is a senior, but is only in his third season playing high school basketball. After starring his first two seasons as South Allegheny, Camic transferred to Serra, but was forced to sit out last season after the WPIAL and PIAA ruled his move was in part for athletic reasons.
• You guys have a big section game [tonight] against Clairton. What's the key to beating them? Probably getting on the boards and playing defense. They're a very athletic team, so you have to stop them in transition.
• Being forced to sit out a season, did that make you stronger? Yeah, it definitely made me a stronger person. It was very hard at first, but I got through it.
• Best player in the WPIAL? (Highlands') Micah Mason.
• Let's say Pittsburgh could get an NBA team on the one condition that the Penguins leave town. Would you support that move? I would want an NBA team no matter what, so I would support it. I'm a big NBA fan.
• Favorite NBA player? Kobe Bryant.
