Athletes of the Week: Dan Maier, Penn-Trafford/Shelby Lindsay, South Park

Last week: A senior, Maier extended his streak of games with at least one goal to 10. He also had a streak of putting up multiple points in 10 consecutive games that was put on the line Thursday night against Hempfield.
Check this out: An alternate captain for a Warriors team that was 14-2 and had the second-best record in PIHL Class AAA before Thursday, Maier entered the week tied for the classification lead in goals (30) and points (50) in 14 games played. Also a standout for the Allegheny Badgers U18 AA travel team, Maier is leading Penn-Trafford in scoring for the third consecutive season.
• Penn-Trafford went 7-12-1 last season. What's been the difference this season? Last year we had a little adversity through the year, but last year the dedication wasn't there for us to come back from all that. This year, there's a lot of seniors and a new coach, and we're all working well together and working hard and it's really paying off for us.
• Similarly, the school's football team went from 4-6 the year before to an undefeated regular season this year ... Our class really has a lot of pride in our athletics and we have a lot of good athletes in our class, and we're really showing it.
• What would winning the scoring title mean to you? It would mean a lot. I've always worked hard to try to produce and help my team out. The most important thing is winning, but that would be a nice pat on the back.
• What's your pick for the Super Bowl? The Giants. The Patriots always win, so I'm going a little different this time.
Last week: Lindsay led the South Park girls basketball team to three wins, all coming by at least 24 points.
The skinny: Lindsay, a junior and three-year starter, is one of the most complete point guards in the WPIAL and the top player for the Eagles, who are ranked No. 1 in Class AAA. Lindsay can score (16 points per game) and pass, but also rebounds extraordinarily well for her position (12 per game).
• Who is your toughest competition in Class AAA? We are kind of rivals with Hopewell because they knocked us out of the playoffs in the first round last season. We know New Castle is really good, too.
• Name something coach Reggie Wells does that you and your teammates joke about? (Laughs) Sometimes he's not the best with names. He calls us the most random names, whatever comes to mind.
• Examples? Dustball and Avatar.
• Favorite food from a fast food restaurant? Grilled Ranch Snack Wraps from McDonald's.
• If you could play for any college in the country right now, which one would it be? Baylor because I love watching them play and I would love to play with Brittney Griner.
