Dominic Giordano, Pine-Richland
Last week: Giordano broke a meet record in winning his second consecutive WPIAL Class AAA diving championship Saturday at North Allegheny.
Check this out: Giordano, a senior, scored a 610.00, which broke the previous mark of 607.30 achieved by former North Allegheny standout Connor Kuremsky in 2011. Giordano topped his closest competitor by 113.35 points. Giordano has accepted a scholarship to Florida State. He'll compete in the PIAA Class AAA championships March 15-16 at Bucknell University. He placed fifth at the PIAA meet as a junior.
• Did you feel there was a good chance you would break the record? No. That was my goal going in, but I wasn't expecting to break it because it was a hard record to break. But it was my goal.
• What would it mean to you to win states? It would definitely top off my high school diving career to win states.
• Favorite thing you did on your visit to Florida State? I think my favorite thing was to hang out with the team, watching them practice and seeing how they operate and how their coach operates.
• The Pitt football team hosts Florida State on Labor Day. Who wins? I think Florida State is going to win.
• Who has the best pizza? Fiori's.
• Last movie you saw in a theater? I can't even remember. It must not have been very good if I can't remember it.
• If you could go on a date with any celebrity, who would it be and where would you take them? I'd take Beyonce on a date and take her to Fiori's for pizza.
• Three things you can always find in your refrigerator? Almond milk, salami and yogurt.
• Most people might be surprised to know that ... I'm kind of a super hero geek.
Maria Lohman, Chartiers Valley
Last week: Lohman became the first WPIAL diver to win titles in consecutive years in different classifications when she took home the gold medal at the WPIAL Class AAA diving championship Saturday at North Allegheny.
Check this out: Lohman, a sophomore, won the Class AA championship as a freshman. Chartiers Valley moved up to Class AAA this season. Lohman scored a 467.60, edging out Bethel Park's Ashley Sams, who finished with a 463.05. Lohman will take part in the PIAA Class AAA championships March 15-16 at Bucknell University. She was the runner-up last year.
• Was it more or less exciting that you won it this year? I thought it was more exciting this year. There was a lot tougher competition. The whole time it was a battle between me and Ashley. We're good friends. She really kept me on my toes.
• Did you do anything to celebrate? Our club team and some other divers went to a restaurant. I think it was called the Dive Bar (and Grille).
• What would it mean to you to win states? Winning states this year is definitely one of my goals. This year I'm going in with a positive attitude. I'm redoing the order of my dives and substituting some other ones. I'll be more confident and ready.
• Any superstitions when you dive? Yeah. My nails always have to be painted blue.
• How much of the diving competition did you watch during Summer Olympics? I tried to watch as much as possible. They did diving around the time I was out of town for nationals, but I recorded everything and I still watch it sometimes.
• Best athlete at Chartiers Valley? (Multi-sport standout) Kristina Coyne.
• Which fast food restaurant has the best french fries? Wendy's.
