Lake Erie and tributaries: With very little safe ice, anglers were targeting panfish and burbot from the bayfront shore, piers and jetties. Winter and spring steelhead runs generally bring fewer but larger fish, and this year has been no exception. Mild conditions, however, have enabled incoming fish to distribute freely throughout the length of the bigger tributaries without the beating they usually take from ice. Translation -- sizeable steelheads were there but scattered and hard to find. No reports of catches from the eastern tributaries, but anglers willing to walk were taking fish on egg patterns on upper Elk and Walnut creeks. Elk Creek was low Thursday, flowing at less than 5 cubic feet per second at Brandy Run. Walnut was the better bet at 50 (cfs) and rising. The chance of snow showers throughout the Erie area was 50 percent for Saturday, with temperatures between 14-20 degrees. Partly sunny Sunday with less chance of snow.

Pymatuning Lake (Crawford County): Catches of walleyes -- mostly small, some legal -- were reported on Ohio and Pennsylvania sides.

Allegheny River (Clarion and Forest counties): Anglers were catching walleyes and sublegal muskies from shore and boats.

Brady's Run Lake (Beaver County): After a state stocking in January, anglers were taking advantage of the absence of ice and catching trout on this early season trout-stocked waters impoundment. Paste baits, maggots and flies were productive. Catches were reported of big bluegills preparing for their usual early spawn.

Raccoon Lake (Beaver County): Some panfish were caught, but the bite was slow. A state trout stocking is planned for Tuesday on this early season trout-stocked waters lake.

Shaggers Inn Reservoir (Clearfield County): Some anglers were fishing through the ice, but caution was urged as mild temperatures continued.

Parker Dam Lake (Clearfield County): Brown and brook trout stocked in November were caught on open water.

Curwensville Dam (Clearfield County): Good-sized muskies were caught and released in the tailrace.

Rose Valley Lake (Lycoming County): A chain pickerel was caught on open water. Anglers were shore fishing near the causeways.

Muncy, Loyalsock, Lycoming creeks (Lycoming County): A state trout stocking was scheduled for Feb. 24 on the streams' delayed harvest stretches.

Little Pine Lake (Lycoming County): A state stocking of rainbow trout was rescheduled for Feb. 22 on this early season trout-stocked waters lake.

Little Juniata Creek (Huntingdon/Blair counties): With perfect flow, choice green coloration and a black midge hatch, the Little J was in prime condition for fly fishing. Recommended patterns -- No. 20 stonefly nymphs and Glo-bugs.

Spring Creek (Centre County): Flow was slightly high but fishable with water temperatures in the high 40s. Small nymphs, egg patterns and San Juan Worms were productive.
