Esche Works Out With Penguins

The Utica Observer Dispatch reported former Flyers human sacrif... er... goaltender Robert Esche worked out with the Penguins last week.
"Esche spent last week in Pittsburgh working out with the Penguins. The 29-year-old Esche got his foot in the door via his friend Mark Recchi, an 18-year NHL vet and Penguins assistant captain. Practicing against young stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, Esche showed off his new and improved physique to the Penguins executives.
"I lost a lot of weight this summer," Esche said. "I feel good and quick, something that I never really had in the NHL. I've never been in that good of shape."
Post-Gazette writer Dave Molinari tells us it's doubtful Esche will end up in a Penguins uniform considering they already have two goaltenders signed to one-way contracts (Marc-Andre Fleury and Dany Sabourin) and a third with NHL experience in the organization (Ty Conklin).
On paper, Esche would seem to be an upgrade over Sabourin and Conklin. Esche has been through the fire having played in numerous NHL postseason and international games. But given that he's still a free agent as training camps are beginning, NHL general managers don't seem to be impressed by his credentials.
