Duquesne Basketball: Johnson leads Dukes to win

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Sean Johnson scored 24 points, going 8 for 8 from the free-throw line, to lead Duquesne past Akron, 81-76, Saturday night in the 2K Sports Classic.
Eric Evans added 15 points, B.J. Monteiro 14 and T.J. McConnell 12 for the Dukes (3-1).
Zeke Marshall, a McKeesport High School graduate, scored 19 points and Brent McClanahan 18 to pace the Zips (2-2). Moon Area High School graduate Brian Walsh added 11 and Demetrius Treadwell 10, while Quincy Diggs had a game-best nine assists.
Both teams shot well. Duquesne made 30 of 55 (54.5 percent) field-goal attempts, while Akron was 28 of 49 (57.1 percent). In fact, the Zips shot better from the field than from the line, making just 14 of 28 (50 percent) free-throw attempts.
Akron battled back from a 38-30 halftime deficit, tying the score, 50-50. Then Mike Talley scored with 9:53 left for a 52-50 Duquesne lead, and the Dukes never trailed after that.
Duquesne will play Valparaiso at 4:30 p.m. today.
