Duquesne made a valiant attempt to upset St. Joe's tonight, but the Dukes fell just short as the Hawks held on for a 74-66 win at the Palumbo Center.
The Dukes got a big night from Andre Marhold with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Sean Johnson scored 13. But it wasn't enough to overcome the Hawks' ability to make big shots down the stretch.
St. Joe's, which never trailed, led 40-33 at the half and still led by seven points -- 49-42 -- with 14 minutes to play. The Dukes mounted a 9-2 run and tied the game at 51-51 on a 3-pointer by Quevyn Winters.
As was the case for almost the entire second half, the Hawks responded with a three-point play by Ronald Roberts and two free throws by Langston Galloway, and never looked back.
The Dukes (7-9, 0-2 in the Atlantic 10) did get back to within one point at 56-55 on another 3-pointer by Winters, but Papa Ndao and Galloway hit consecutive 3-pointers to put St. Joe's back ahead by seven.
St. Joe's (9-5, 1-1) was picked to win the Atlantic 10.
