Dukes fall short in 78-71 loss to St. Bonaventure

The second time was not a charm, either.
Duquesne lost to St. Bonaventure tonight, 78-71, at the Palumbo Center. Much like the first time these two teams played, it was mostly because the Bonnies made big plays down the stretch and the Dukes did not.
And much like the first game between these two teams -- a 68-60 win by St. Bonaventure on Feb. 2 -- the Bonnies also outrebounded the Dukes, 35-26, and had a sizeable advantage in points in the paint (36-20).
It was the Dukes' seventh consecutive home loss, third loss in a row and their 14th loss in 15 games. Duquesne (8-19, 1-12 in Atlantic 10) was led by Quevyn Winters with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Demitrius Conger and Chris Johnson each had 19 for St. Bonaventure (13-13, 6-7).
St. Bonaventure led 41-35 at the half, but the Dukes battled all the way back and tied the game 59-59 on two free throws by Andre Marhold with 8:35 to play.
But the Dukes, despite having several opportunities, could not actually ever take a second-half lead, and St. Bonaventure got a couple of offensive rebounds to extend possessions and spark a 7-0 run.
The Dukes never got to within three points again.
