District Roundup: Late basket by Jones lifts Colonials

Velton Jones made a jump shot with 11 seconds remaining to lift Robert Morris to a 60-57 win against LIU Brooklyn Saturday at Wellness, Athletic and Recreation Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Karvel Anderson knocked down two free throws to seal the game for the Colonials (15-8, 7-3 Northeast Conference), who have won seven of their past eight games.

Anderson led Robert Morris with 13 points. Lucky Jones had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Russell Johnson added 12 points.

Robert Morris, which had an eight-point advantage with more than 10 minutes remaining, saw its lead vanish late in the contest. LIU Brooklyn's Jason Brickman made two free throws to give his team a 55-53 lead with 3:01 remaining.

After Anderson's 3-pointer, the Blackbirds regained the lead, 57-56, on Jamal Olasewere's jump shot. But Robert Morris pulled ahead for good after Velton Jones' floater in the lane.

Brickman scored 19 points for LIU Brooklyn (11-11, 6-4). Olasewere had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Other men's game

• West Virginia 77, Texas Tech 61: Freshman Eron Harris scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half to lead West Virginia against host Texas Tech. Harris hit 3 of 5 3-pointers in the second half to spark the Mountaineers after missing all four tries from beyond the arc in the first half. Aaric Murray added 12 points for West Virginia (10-11, 3-5 Big 12), which was 10 of 18 on 3-point attempts. The Mountaineers never trailed, but the Red Raiders kept it close briefly in the second half. Ty Nurse scored 14 points for Texas Tech (9-10, 2-6) and Jaye Crockett added 13.

Women's game

• Robert Morris 47, LIU Brooklyn 41: Robert Morris rallied back after a long slump in the second half and freshman guard Ashley Ravelli led all scorers with 17 points to lead visiting Colonials past LIU Brooklyn. Robert Morris led, 36-23, before the Blackbirds (4-16, 1-8 Northeast Conference) regained the lead with a 16-2 run. With a little more than a minute remaining and the score tied, 41-41, Ravelli made a 3-pointer for a lead the Colonials (5-15, 4-5) did not relinquish. Artemis Spanou posted her 15th consecutive double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds for Robert Morris.
