WhoWhatWHEREWhy: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

NEW YORK -- Who doesn't want a little comfort in life? But too much of anything is never good.
That's the aura of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this season, which will preview through Thursday the trends that will make a splash next fall.
Now in its fourth season at Lincoln Center, the biannual event's usual crop of fashion and beauty journalists, buyers and enthusiasts who attend from across the globe seem to be getting a little too cozy with the uptown home.
Maybe it's the bitter winds -- a rarity this winter -- that smack guests in the face day after day as they exit the tents that have enthusiasm stalled and the dress code stagnant on black. Or perhaps it's the shroud of shock and sadness that enveloped Saturday night's events once news of singer Whitney Houston's death overtook Twitter and small talk between shows.
Whatever the reason, attendees have been acting like juniors on the first day of high school rather than their eager-yet-anxious underclassmen: They've been here before and they know what to expect, so why get worked up?

Even many of the celebrities aren't a surprise because program notes emailed to some guests in advance of an event sometimes list who's expected to attend, as if to say, "Look, this famous person will be there. Shouldn't you?"
There has been a welcome dose of fresh Hollywood this season added to the reality show regulars in the front row, thanks in part to "The Descendants" actress Shailene Woodley. She and Emily VanCamp from ABC's "Revenge" were spotted last week at Jason Wu, prompting some to wonder if these starlets were on the lookout for red carpet wear.
"I don't have to do anything I don't want to do. I want to be here," Ms. Woodley told Women's Wear Daily.
