• What to do: Huntingdon and Blair counties' Lower (rhymes with "flower") Trail is named for the rails-to-trails advocate who initiated the project in 1990. The 16.5-mile trail is suitable for walking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and is wheelchair-accessible. The trail is nearly flat, surfaced with rolled crushed limestone and asphalt, and winds back and forth across the Juniata River on former railroad bridges. During the 1830s, much of the trail was part of the Pennsylvania Canal, which connected Philadelphia to Pittsburgh before the advent of the railroad. In winter it's easier to see remnants of canal locks, channels and buildings near the trail.
