The topic this year for the Allegheny County Library Association's One Book, One Community effort is the region's growing interest in "greening" its environment, hence the selection of "A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail," author Bill Bryson's 1998 comedic tale.
"Bill Bryson's lessons learned along the Appalachian Trail underscore the importance of preserving our natural environment," said Chasity Leonette, ACLA's community partnerships coordinator, in explaining the association's choice.
She added that Pittsburgh's selection as host city for World Environmental Day June 5 was another inspiration.
One Book, One Community kicks off a variety of events throughout the year April 2 at the Geek Art/Green Innovators Festival from 5-11 p.m. in Garfield.
The program is also working with Sustainable Pittsburgh, Venture Outdoors, Highmark, AARP and the Community College of Allegheny County's North Campus. Events include walks in regional parks and a health fair, Ms. Leonette said.
ACLA will also sponsor book discussions in its 44 membership libraries throughout the county. A schedule of discussions will be posted at libraries starting next month.
