In an age when the Internet has taken the tactile pleasure out of shopping and chain stores have made mass-produced sameness the norm, the good news is that Pizzazz begins Wednesday. This annual shopping benefit for the Garden Club of Allegheny County (a member of the Garden Club of America since 1914) invites an assortment of distinctive vendors from around the country to set up shop for three days at Fox Chapel Golf Club. Proceeds support GCAC's philanthropic efforts, and this year it will help to fund construction of the green roof at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Pizzazz is back after a one-year hiatus that had fans clamoring for its return. But Pizzazz chair Carol Weir notes that the decision to suspend the event last year was made out of respect for the times.
Pizzazz will open with a preview party 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Tickets are $50 at the door. For reservations, call 412-422-0921.
Pizzazz hours are 9:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday. Admission is $10 or $25 including a buffet luncheon. Call 412-422-0921 for lunch reservations.
A new "Bring a Friend for Free" evening is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday. The $30 admission (for one or two people) includes wine and light fare.

"In 2008, Pizzazz was scheduled for the third week of October, and that was basically when the market crashed," Ms. Weir says. "When we were planning the next year, we wanted to be a responsible community partner. It was tough to ask people to spend for luxury items. We just felt it was time to take a year off and not hold a shopping extravaganza when the economy was in such a rough space."
But this year, things are looking up.
