Luther Dupree has a sweet way to longevity
When Luther Dupree of East Liberty turned 100, he said the secret to his long life was his varied diet: healthy foods such as sweet potatoes and green vegetables and lots of sweets. It's still working for him; he's now 101.
He was born on Nov. 25, 1910, in Dillon, S.C., the 12th of William and Laura Jane Dupree's 14 children. He is the only surviving member of the family.
In March 1937, he married Gertrude McCall and they moved to Pittsburgh.
They had five children: Mary Thompson of McKeesport, Gladys Dupree of Atlanta, Elaine Wood of Penn Hills, Luther J. Dupree of Point Breeze and Gertrude Dupree (deceased).
Mr. Dupree worked for 37 years for Westinghouse Electric, retiring in 1975. He then worked as a photographer at a Pennsylvania Driver's License Center until retiring in 1993.
His wife died in 1999 after 62 years of marriage.
He enjoys watching television and going out to eat.
Mr. Dupree is very active and also serves as a deacon at Unity Baptist Church in Braddock, formerly Bethel Baptist. He maintains that it is much easier to do the right thing.
He celebrated his birthday with friends and relatives, including his children, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren at home.
