Maurice Cox, urban designer and former mayor of Charlottesville, Va., will be the featured speaker Monday at the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh's Design Excellence Lecture Series.
He most recently served as director of design for the National Endowment for the Arts, where he presided over the largest expansion of direct grants to the design fields and oversaw the Governors Institute on Community Design and the Mayors Institute on City Design.
He will speak about the architect's many roles in the design process -- problem identifier and solver, community leader, agitator and advocate. He believes in making design accessible by meeting clients where they are. Mr. Cox is the founding partner of RBGC Architecture, a firm whose design for a New Rural Village in Bayview, Va., received several national design awards.
Following his talk, a panel discussion with local design practitioners will take place, followed by a reception.
Tickets for the event are $20. The lecture series will begin at 6 p.m. (registration at 5:30 p.m.) at the George Rowland White Theatre, University Center, Point Park University, 414 Wood St., Downtown.
