Leading the way was a blond Rihanna in a barely there black gown, with plunging neckline and absentee back, which she described as a collaboration with Armani that was a combo of classic and gangsta. The head-turner had Ryan Seacrest saying "Thank you" instead of "Hello" during the E! network's red carpet coverage.
Alicia Keys, with Bruno Mars hair, wore a knee-length black dress for her Etta James tribute with Bonnie Raitt, and multiple winner Adele also wore black, dazzling in all-over sparkle. No one did the shiny metallic look as well as Jesse J, in a structured mermaid gown and with hair tamed into structured bangs. Kelly Rowland also was a standout in a dusty rose Alberta Ferretti gown with a silver-embellished bodice.
Fergie rocked a bright orange, laser-cut Jean-Paul Gaultier gown that revealed her black undergarments. Her mother at her side said she wanted the Black Eyed Pea to wear something more conservative, but Fergie was still her rock 'n' roll rebel. Nicki Minaj tried too hard to be outrageous in a bright red floor-length coat that was a cross between a cloak you'd see on a cardinal or Little Red Riding Hood. Katy Perry was lovely in ice blue from the top of her blue hair to her flowing, perfectly fitted gown. Representing country in similar fashion were Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift, golden girls in lacy, embellished gowns.
Overall, over-the-top rocker looks were few, represented by yellow-fringed Bonnie McKee and toy gun-toting Sasha Gravida. OK, Lady Gaga had a scepter, too. With the notable exception of Rihanna and Fergie, cleavage was mostly covered and sleeves most often were the order of the day. Best of all, attention was paid to fit that flattered curves, and glamour and good taste were very much in evidence.
