For urban farmers looking to retain some big-city sophistication, there is a New York-style solution for housing egg-laying birds: the Chicken Co-op ($3,500). Designed by James Ramsey of RAAD Studio in Manhattan, the three-story structure features stacked nesting rooms and floor-to-ceiling windows.
"It's a Modernist, high-end chicken coop," Mr. Ramsey said. "It's like the condo craze of two years ago, except you're building this luxury condominium for chickens." Requests from two Manhattan clients led to the idea for the product.
The painted wood and acrylic components of the structure are cut by a computer-driven router, shipped as a flat package, and can be assembled without tools. The finished structure includes four nesting rooms, a sliding tray for cleaning, a third-floor roosting area and a solar-powered fan -- features for "discriminating poultry," Mr. Ramsey said.
