Inside, the 69th annual Golden Globes may have been all about who won what, but outside on the red carpet the talk was all about who was wearing whom.

Last night at Hollywood's kickoff to award season, starlets wooed paparazzi and couch-beached pop culture junkies watching from home alike with a mix of colors, silhouettes and designers. A handful of trends rose above the rest in the sea of celebrity.

Baring the flesh (tones)

Standing out was about blending in for many stars with nudes, beiges, ivories and creams. Piper Perabo was a spectacle (for better or worse) in a no-shortage-on-fabric ball gown with minimal embellishments, while Charlize Theron exuded soft sex appeal in a pale plunging dress gathered at the hip with trailing train.

Another beige beauty was presenter Elle Macpherson in a form fitting strapless dress with tiered tulle fish tale by Zac Posen.

Crowning jewels

If the red carpet was a Twitter feed, jewel tones would have been a trending hashtag. Deep sapphires, jades, emeralds and crimsons dotted the meet-and-greet parade.

Madonna, making her first promenade on the Globes' red carpet since 1998, marked her return in a jade and metallic Reem Acra with delicate capped sleeves with a touch of shimmer.

Prime-time star Melissa McCarthy of "Mike and Molly" turned out in emerald Badgley Mischka with long sleeves and deep V-neck. "Modern Family" Sofia Vergara, Kelly Osbourne and Freida Pinto all stunned in cool blue-green sapphire tones.

Looking glam -- but not overdone

From squeezing in last-minute crunches to making a few final dress alterations, there's just so much to do in those final hours before showtime. So why spend them setting an overly complicated up-do?

That looked like the thinking behind many hairstyles sported at the Globes. Effortless elegance came to life via loose flowing curls, ponytails and messy buns at the nape of the neck.

Honorable mentions ...

Young Hollywood represents : Move over, Angelina Jolie (although she did exude killer glamour in a white satin Atelier Versace dress with a douse of red across the neckline, nicely complementing her ruby lips and clutch). There was much ado about whether the industry's budding newbies would be able to hold their own in the style department against veteran red carpet walkers.

Yes, they did. Ariel Winter of "Modern Family" fame was probably the envy of any 14-year-old in a yummy plum Dolce & Gabbana dress with ruffled skirt and peek-a-boo black tulle. Co-star Sarah Hyland also impressed in vintage D&G (and didn't lose her composure during a zipper snafu that required on-carpet sewing assistance).

Emma Stone combined elegance and edge in purple Lanvin with statement belt, and Rooney Mara exuded a similar vibe with her black Nina Ricci with nearly-to-the-navel neckline with cutouts down the front and sides.

A little fishy : For those who were torn between the grandeur of a full skirt and the figure-flattering flare of a form-fitting silhouette, the mermaid dress seemed to be the answer. Stars who tried it: Ms. Vergara, Ms. Macpherson, Paula Patton and the list goes on and on.

Spring has sprung early for some : Gowns in colors that harkened thoughts of warm weather and butterflies and fields of tulips were welcome breaths of fresh air among the deep saturated sapphires and ethereal (yet sometimes washed out) blushes and beiges. Leading the pack were "The Help's" Octavia Spencer in a lilac Tadashi Shoji with deep V-neck and sparkling embellishments and Ms. Patton in eye-popping canary yellow.

Sarah Michelle Gellar : She can't be accused of following the pack in her tie-dyed blue and white strapless ball gown by Monique Lhuillier and poker straight ponytail. She told the media her 2-year-old helped her pick it out. (And it sort of looked like it.) But kudos to her for daring to be different.
