Earth Day campaign promotes greener living

It's easy being green. That's the underlying theme of Earth Day 2011's "A Billion Acts of Green" campaign, which inspires and rewards simple individual acts and larger organizational initiatives that further the goal of measurably reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability.

Sponsored by the Earth Day Network in Washington, D.C., the goal is to register one billion actions in advance of the 2012 Earth Summit. To date, more than 80 million actions have been logged.

Qualifying actions are limited only by the creativity of participants and are as simple as unplugging appliances, planting a garden, using less plastic, relying less on cars for transportation, and using both sides of a sheet of paper.

• April 23 Earth Day Workshops, Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, Oakland. Clean Water and Archaeoastronomy workshops. 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. 412-622-3131.

• April 23 Green Lifestyles Expo, Mall at Robinson. Join NewsRadio 1020 KDKA for games, prizes and instruction by Pennsylvania Resources Council on composting, rain barrel installation, organic gardening and more. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Free. www.prc.org/GreenLifestyles.html.

• April 23 Earth Day 2011, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Gardners. Volunteers needed for bridge construction, invasive species removal, tree planting, landscaping and painting. Lunch provided. Meet at Furnace Stack Pavilion. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 1-717-486-7174.

• April 29 Tyke Hikes on Earth, Dormont Park. Leisurely stroll and trash pick-up. Bring trash bag and gloves. Meet at parking lot at Dormont and Annapolis avenues. 10 a.m.-noon. Free. Register: 412-973-0633.

• April 30 Mt. Lebanon Earth Day Celebration, Mt. Lebanon Park. Displays, vendors, demos, live music, food, activities for kids and more. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Free. www.earthdaymtlebanon.org.

• April 30 Invasive Species Removal Day, Moraine State Park, Portersville. Join other volunteers to restore native plants to the south shore area and the butterfly trail. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Preregister: 724-368-8811.
