They're calling it "Iron Chef Latkes."
At 6:30 p.m. next Thursday at Hillel Jewish University Center, Jewish students will compete in a dramatic cook-off of latkes, the potato pancakes that are traditional Hanukkah fare -- with a twist.
"They will not just be making your Bubbie's latkes," as the spokesman Marc Schutzbank puts it; instead, they will have to work with a variety of vegetables, fruits and spices. Judges will score based on creativity, taste and presentation. The aim: to "separate meal-plan students from gourmet chefs," Mr. Schutzbank says. "It should be a lot of fun, and pretty hilarious."
Students also will bring toys and gifts to be distributed to needy families, light candles in memory of the miracle of Hanukkah and enjoy music by the David Landes Jazz band and the Vokols, a Jewish a cappella group. The center is located at 4607 Forbes Ave. in Oakland.
