Celebrations Spotlight: Nicole Myers and Simon Cummings
Nicole Myers and Simon Cummings wed on Oct. 8, 2011. The couple currently resides in the Pittsburgh area.
Q: How did you meet?
Nicole: We are both professional cellists, and we met through connections at our alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University. We became great friends after working together in our band, Cello Fury , and the rest is history!
Q: Where did you each grow up?
Nicole: Simon grew up in Pittsburgh and I am originally from Lancaster. We both call Pittsburgh home and love living in this city.
Q: Who proposed? How?
Nicole: Simon proposed on our three-year anniversary. We were in the Laurel Highlands and spent the day outdoors exploring Ohiopyle. In the evening, we ate dinner at Nemacolin Woodlands where we happened to be dining right beside Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury! He's definitely our favorite player on the team now, because later that night, Simon got down on one knee and proposed.
Q: Where were you married? Why did you choose that site?
Nicole: We were married at Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside, the church that Simon has attended since childhood and where we now both attend.
Q: Where was the reception and honeymoon? Why did you choose those sites?
Nicole: Our reception was held at the Edgewood Club. We liked the classic ambiance of the Club, with its beautiful wooden floors and glass doors that open up to the wrap-around porch. Our caterer, big Catering, does many weddings there, so it worked out perfectly.
Q: We went to Paris, Nice, and London for our honeymoon. At the end of the trip we visited Simon's British grandmother who couldn't travel overseas for the wedding. It was wonderful to spend some time with her.
Q: Who came the farthest?
Nicole: Some of Simon's relatives and one of our bridesmaids travelled from England to attend the wedding. We were honored to have them be a part of our day!
Q: What was the funniest thing that happened?
Nicole: Simon asked his two brothers, Matt and Dan, to give his toast. They came up with a song about the three of them growing up together, mixing in funny anecdotes in a heartfelt way. Everyone at the reception was in stitches! It was definitely one of the highlights of the evening.
Q: Who was your favorite wedding vendor? Why?
Nicole: We had several amazing vendors at our wedding. Big Catering did a fabulous job providing all-vegan food with passed hor d'oeuvres and food stations. People commented that they never thought vegan food could be that good! Our photographer, Alisa Garin of Weddings by Alisa, took the most beautiful photos throughout the entire day. She captured incredible moments and everyone is still commenting how wonderfully the photos turned out! Last but not least, Sugar Cafe provided four kinds of vegan cupcakes elegantly presented on a tier with a personalized vegan wedding cake at the top.
Q: What's the best marriage advice you received?
Nicole: Simon's grandparents, Marie and Wayne Cummings, gave us good advice: "Always communicate with each other, keep an open mind, and don't go to bed angry. Marriage is a partnership and no one is the boss!" Considering that they have been married for 65 years, we know that it's great advice!
Other details:
Nicole: Music was a really important part of our day. Simon composed my processional, which was performed by a nine-piece string ensemble comprised of our friends, who are all professional musicians themselves. Two of our bridesmaids and another close friend performed violin, harp and vocal solos during the service. Following the ceremony, guests were entertained by the fabulous Maureen Budway Quartet at the cocktail hour, with DJ Carlton of Entertainment Unlimited providing music for dinner and dancing. All of the musicians were friends or colleagues of ours, so it made the day even more special.
