Celebrations Spotlight: Judith and Bob Richardson
Judith and Bob Richardson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 20, 2012. The couple has four children: Robert Richardson Jr., Randy Richardson, Rodney Richardson and the late Kelly Jean Richardson and eight grandchildren: Vanna, Jordan, Carly, Lindsay, Madeleine, Robert, Randy and Miranda. They reside in Beechview.
Q: How did you meet?
Judith: Bob and I met at our friends' Merilyn and Jack Carrol's Memorial Day picnic. Merilyn introduced us.
Q: Where did you each grow up?
Judith: I grew up in the Homewood-Brushton section of the city while Bob grew up on Kelly Street in Homewood -- hence the name of our first and only daughter, Kelly.
Q: Who proposed? How?
Judith: Bob proposed to me after dinner at a Chinese restaurant. We were strolling along in Squirrel Hill and Bob stopped in front of Binstock's Jewelry and asked me to pick out a ring and marry him.
Q: Where were you married?
Judith: We were married at St. Bernadette's school because St. Bernadette's church hadn't been built yet. Our wedding took place in the gymnasium in front of 400 guests! We chose this site because, at that time, I was living on Northern Pike in Monroeville.
Q: Where was the reception and honeymoon?
Judith: Our reception was held at the Eagles Club in Swissvale and our wedding night was spent at Conley's on Rt. 22. Our honeymoon destination was Niagara Falls and we planned to make stops in Philadelphia and Connecticut. In Philadelphia, we stayed at the Marriott. My favorite memory was looking out our window and seeing ice skaters using the swimming pool as their rink! Unfortunately, we never made it to Niagara Falls because I developed bronchitis and Bob had to turn around and bring me to St. Joe's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Q: Do you still own any of your wedding gifts? If so, what?
Judith: We still own a steam iron and a mixer that still works from our wedding.
Q: What activity do you enjoy doing most as a couple?
Judith: We enjoy going to the Rivers Casino now in our retirement.
Q: How did you celebrate your anniversary?
Judith: We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our close friends and family at a mass at St. Pamphilus Church and a luncheon at Whiskey Hollow Grill. Bob always says we have 50 "grand and glorious years together!" He writes "grand and glorious" on every anniversary card each year!
