When Gloria Cheshier and Joe Forrester moved from Leadville, Colo., to Beaver County, they wanted to live in a vibrant downtown where they could walk to shops, a bank, library and post office.
Beaver Borough fit the couple's requirements, with its lively Third Street business district, flat topography and riverfront park. They bought this Victorian-era house at 190 Beaver St. in 1999.
"It's pretty close to perfect," said Mrs. Cheshier, adding, "people came to my garage sale on Rollerblades."
Now the couple is downsizing and have listed their five-bedroom, 3 1/2-bath home (MLS No. 790328) for $399,900 with Bovard-Anderson Realtors Bev Pietrandrea and Ed McLaughlin (724-774-5330).

Mrs. Cheshier, executive director of the Beaver County Foundation, and her husband, president of Community College of Beaver County, loved the house the moment they spotted it.
"We walked through it once and wrote the contract immediately. We have loved living here," said Mrs. Cheshier.
Although a novice gardener, she joined the Tusca-Ridge Garden Club, spent hours in garden centers and planted perennial gardens in front and back plus a vegetable garden and two raspberry bushes. Mrs. Cheshier's favorite flowers are the white peonies with a pink tinge. There also are orange Oriental poppies, yellow iris and hot pink rhododendrons. A birdbath, gazing ball and fountain are visible from the front porch. In the backyard, an antique fountain spews water into a bowl.
Built in 1911, the double-walled brick home has a 40-foot-long front porch stenciled with a black diamond pattern. The home has four bay windows and two dormers. Before the couple moved in, the previous owners replaced all the double-hung windows with anodized bronze windows and installed a dark gray shingle roof.
