Big Pour tickets also take you to IPAs
Tickets for Construction Junction's Sept. 10 Steel City Big Pour don't go on sale until noon on Aug. 15, unless you want to pay more for a "reuse enthusiast" sponsorship package.
Available through Aug. 14, the new $140 package includes everything you get with the $65 ticket, including a growler, taster glass, bottle opener, and new-this-year brew caddy, plus a Big Pour T-shirt, a $25 Construction Junction gift card and your name in the program. There are 150 packages available for each of the two tasting sessions (noon to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.); any leftovers will be rolled back into the regular ticket pool (constructionjunction.org/pages/bigpour).
If you need an excuse to drink an India pale ale today, know that today is IPA Day. You can learn about the social media event at ipaday.eventbrite.com.
IPA being my favorite style, I may sip something from a new sampler case I recently picked up: The "Alpha Collection ... homage to the hop" from Frederick, Md.'s Flying Dog, featuring its Snake Dog IPA, Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA, and one of a limited-edition, first-time-in-bottles Imperial IPA series (single-hopped Simcoe), plus Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale.
Some local IPAs include Church Brew Works' ThunderHop, East End Brewing's Big Hop, Erie Brewing's Misery Bay and Full Pint's Chinookie.
You can try several at the IPA-themed next Tasting Tuesday at the Pines Tavern. From 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 9, they'll be pouring Sly Fox Rt. 113 IPA, Victory Hop Devil IPA, Stone IPA, New Holland Mad Hatter IPA and Appalachian Hoppy Trails IPA. Admission is $12 (plus tax and gratuity); reservations are recommended (724-625-3252), but walk-ins are welcome, too.
Locally, IPA day is going to be Aug. 20, when Mad Mex Cranberry puts on its Hatch IPA Jam, pouring more than two dozen IPAs, including Fat Head's award-winning Head Hunter, from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets to the tasting are $20 ($30 at the door) and are on sale there (724-741-5656) and at Fat Head's. Fare made with New Mexican Hatch chili peppers goes on sale as the party continues until closing that Saturday.
Bengali Tiger is an IPA from Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn, N.Y., whose brews are just hitting Pittsburgh in unusual 16-ounce cans.
