Oktoberfest season is upon us, and there are lots of local fests to go to.

I love the sounds of Roctoberfest, the second "tastival" for Carnegie Library of Homestead in Munhall, starting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 6. Rock Bottom in Homestead and 23 other regional breweries will be pouring -- with a focus on German-inspired styles -- along with live music at two venues: Rock Bottom and nearby SingSing in The Waterfront. Tickets are $25 (with a souvenir pint glass, 10 tasting tickets and food) or $10 (with a glass and five tasting tickets), and additional tickets will be available for $1 each (www.librarymusichall.com/rockbottom or 412-368-5225).

Other Oktoberfests tend to happen in September, including:

Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh at SouthSide Works is celebrating "The 14 Days of Oktoberfest" through Sept. 25, with events each day in the restaurant. It won't be taking over a nearby parking lot this year, but both Sundays there's a Bier Garten Party out back. The Wednesdays are for contests, including one for stein-holding. The Oktoberfest beer is here from Munich (hofbrauhauspittsburgh.com).

The North Side'sPenn Brewery celebrates starting this weekend: Friday-Sunday and Sept. 23-25. Food, beer (including its Oktoberfest and others) and entertainment flow from 5 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays (when, after 8 p.m., you must be 21 and older) and 4 to 10 p.m. Sundays. (More at pennbrew.com.)

Lawrenceville's Church Brew Works marks its 15th fest Friday through Oct. 2. You can take home its Oktoberfest in a 5-liter can (churchbrew.com).

Barley's & Hop's in Bethel Park holds its fourth Oktoberfest this weekend, with a charity event for Bethel Bounty in the tent Friday night, and the big fest with music, food and more beer from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday (barleysandhops.com).

The Brewerie at Union Station in Erie is having one on Saturday (brewerie.com).

The Pines Tavern is holding an Oktoberfest beer class at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 at which Penn Brewery founder Tom Pastorius, Penn's Eric Heinauer, Beaver Brewing Co.'s Dan Woodske and Pine beer director Lisa Donaldson compare several American and German Oktoberfest beers. Which is better, Sam Adams' or Spaten's? Penn's or Ayinger's? Cost is $25; reserve at 724-625-3252.
