Who knows where the whole pension crisis for public employees in Pennsylvania will go? Teachers and public employees and their unions have threatened a lawsuit if Gov. Tom Corbett's proposals are adopted. While I'm no fan of Mr. Corbett, I am glad something is being proposed.
My question is this: Do not teachers and public employees have a financial obligation to at least themselves, beyond making their own contributions to their pensions, to make sure that obligations of school districts, towns, cities and municipalities are met concerning those agreed-upon pension contributions? I would think that they would be kicking and screaming to get those obligations met. I would think they would force their unions to do something about it long before now!
Why not the threat of lawsuits before now? Could it be that they all knew that the taxpayer would be forced to pick up the tab and that was just fine with them? The taxpayer would pay it anyhow, but if they had forced the issue long ago we would not be in this crisis today. As I see it, the teachers and public employees bear a lot of responsibility for this mess.
