Why this outcome?

A young man lies dead ("Deputy Fatally Shoots Man After East Liberty Standoff," June 14), with nothing more than a harmless pellet gun in his hand. A grieving family is looking for answers and under the circumstances most deservedly so. There were enough officers, including a SWAT team, on the scene to keep this situation under control without this horrible and likely preventable outcome.

Where was the threat? Why shoot before all the other options are examined?

At worst this teenager should be in a jail cell getting help rather than meeting this fate. The officer who fired the shot may have been looking to be a hero, but it would be far more heroic to preserve a life this time than to take one.
