When to step in

Thank you to the editors responsible for publishing Jonathan Cohn's "The GM Rescue Matters to Everyone" (Oct. 28). Mr. Cohn was able to shed light on important philosophical points regarding the difficulties that arise when attempting to access the economic role of government and to frame those difficulties between two very polarized groups in America.

There certainly are some who believe government is best that governs least. Some even endorse the expansion of government's functions as a panacea for all social ills. We must keep in mind that the comparison should not be between perfect markets and imperfect governments or between faulty markets and an all-knowing, rational, benevolent government, but between two imperfect institutions.

I am hoping the majority of Americans share the view that our government has an obligation in the areas discussed by Mr. Cohen. I believe they do.
