We're not cowboys

I agree with Ray Priest's letter ("Consider Germany and the Benefits of Socialism," Nov. 21). Germany and most of Europe are socialist societies. They offer free health care and many have free college educations. Money is spent to enrich the lives for the entire population, unlike, unfortunately, the United States.

The problem is, as long as politicians scare the gullible with how scary socialism is, how it takes away from us the freedoms we have, there will be no way for us to ever adopt any of the German-style society. As long as America has the John Wayne mentality, the cowboy image of the individual, we will never see these kind of improvements to our society.

Too bad, because the John Wayne image is good for venture capitalists and politicians and not to the rest of us who work for an hourly wage. But scare people into this mode and the rich will keep getting richer and the rest of us will get poorer and sicker.
