We owe the children

We owe them. We owe them profoundly, these 20 children. We owe them for betraying their safety, for allowing their futures to be destroyed. We owe them for not standing up to the mad men who promoted free access to guns in our society, for the craziness of allowing assault weapons in the hands of citizens, for allowing people to carry guns with no training, no licensing, no rigorous review of their fitness to carry guns.
Now let us apologize in the only way that matters. Let us ban assault weapons forever. Let us pledge that we will have the will and determination to make this the last group of students who die for our stupidity and our failure of courage. It is the least we can do, and perhaps, just perhaps, we can spare our children and grandchildren from the scourge of the gun.
