Verify our votes

With all the recent discussion about voter suppression and photo ID in the news lately, I was wondering if anyone else is concerned that there is no paper trail to their vote. After I push the electronic voting screen, where does it go? The cloud? When I worked the polls years ago, there was a large master sheet that could be rechecked if there were any questions.
Voter suppression could happen if the computer is compromised. If I were going to try to steal an election (and I'm not) this is where I'd focus my energy. It is appalling that in this great nation we cannot trust that our vote will indeed be counted.
