Vatican II awakened a new view of faith that lives on

Many thanks to Ann Rodgers and the PG for coverage of 50th year commemorations of Vatican II ("Cardinal Discusses Vatican II," Sept. 30).

The remarkable reforms of the council awakened in us a new view of ourselves as integral baptized members of our church. We became renewed, updated, thinking and acting people of faith.

And nobody did (and does) it better than U.S. nuns. They became scholars, theologians, lawyers, executives, social workers -- all in the name of service to the world. And even though the Vatican told them to back off, they continue unabashedly to take on issues of injustice, racism, women's rights, environmentalism, et al.

The laity won't be stopped either. Rather than wringing our hands over attempts to rein in our consciences, we will carry on being persuasive, inclusive, active, visionary and trustful of the Spirit, who cannot be suppressed!
