Regarding your fine series on UPMC's use of nonprofit status for most of its properties ("UPMC: Forging a Giant Footprint," Sept. 23-26): Thank you for shining a light on the subject in detail.
It escapes me why such supposedly intelligent, ethical people keep making errors in judgment. The cynical extension of the contract between UPMC and Highmark into and through 2014 makes obvious the need of UPMC to fill up the new hospital in Monroeville, since far fewer patients are insured with UPMC than with Highmark. I would have continued insuring with UPMC if it had not "behaved in such an ungentlemanly manner" to quote Jane Austen -- with blatant, monopolist greed and disregard for the community of patients, however good their health providers.
I would like to add another thought: Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System really must get together as soon as possible. It seems that there's plenty of money available, so just do it as adroitly as possible!
