UPMC acted disgracefully toward these doctors

I am writing in response to your article "Doctors' Flight From UPMC to Highmark Leaves Patients Scrambling" (Dec. 26). Since one of the medical doctors in question, Pamela Kridgen, is my doctor, I feel the need to comment. I think the headline was a bit misleading; however, the article was right on. These doctors did the right thing -- they gave the proper notice, which would have given them time to alert their patients and ease the transition. UPMC, however, did not. Instead of honoring their right to move on, and with no regard to the women who use these doctors, it simply dismissed them. Disgraceful!
The people of Pittsburgh need to take a hard look at the tactics of UPMC. This is the reason it is essential that this city have a strong health network that can give good old-fashioned competition to UPMC, which seeks to dominate. Competition is a good thing, but UPMC has done all it can to squash it. Do not allow that to happen, Pittsburgh. This health care behemoth must be kept in check.
Thank you, Dr. Kridgen and all of your MD colleagues who clearly have had enough. Thank you for the wonderful care I and so many others have experienced from you. I am happy to hear that you are able to practice in Allegheny County, but rest assured, whatever county you were in, I would find you. Best of luck to all doctors involved in this. I am sure wherever you are, your patients will find you.
