Thank you for your March 3 editorial "Don't Give Up: It's Time to Lead, Not Surrender, on Gun Safety." I agree. And I have written to my two Pennsylvania senators urging that they vote for Sen. Dianne Feinstein's legislation to ban assault weapons and large magazine clips and to insist on background checks for each person desiring to purchase a weapon.

Will both Bob Casey and Pat Toomey respond to my appeal and that of the majority of Americans after the horrifying massacre in Newtown, Conn.? I hope so.

Will you ask your readers to contact whomever is their representative in the U.S. House and urge him or her to vote for the companion bill in the House sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a Democrat of New York. I am contacting my representative, Tim Murphy, R-18th District, to do so.

Mr. Casey is a Democrat and Mr. Toomey a Republican, but this is no time for party differences. It is time to unite against the National Rifle Association.

The address for the U.S. Senate is Washington, D.C., 20510, and for the House, Washington, D.C., 20515. Please do write.
