These weapons do not belong in ordinary hands

I am a life member of the National Rifle Association, but I do not believe in what it believes in and promotes. I am also a disabled veteran of the Korean War. In the service, I was a weapons instructor and an expert rifleman with the M-1 military rifle 30-06 caliber.
I know that the AK-47 rifle and assault weapons like the AR-15 are meant for one thing -- killing people, mainly the enemy. In fact, the AK-47 is an excellent weapon for combat. It is hard to jam or disable and is excellent for killing the enemy, i.e., people. In fact, in the military the word "weapon" is a code word that means "a gun for killing people."
Why do we need this type of killing weapon in ordinary life? I have my own rifles, but not for killing people. I do believe that police officers or the military should have these types of weapons, but not civilians who can use them to kill police officers or their fellow citizens. Furthermore, we should require background checks of purchasers of guns. If we had this kind of check, it could have prevented the murder of my cousin in Pittsburgh by a mentally ill person.
Stop the killings! I was never taught nor did I ever teach the use of weapons or guns with the belief that they would be available for use in the killing of babies or innocent people, and I am by definition a first-class combat rifleman.
