The upside-down flag mentality is repulsive

It is disappointing to me that big-government/free spending/expanding entitlement society/cradle-to-grave care President Barack Obama was re-elected, but as one who respects the office of the president, I am repulsed that some small-minded individuals/haters have chosen to fly our treasured American flag upside down in protest.

An upside-down American flag is a distress signal, not a tool to be manipulated to make political statements. Displaying it upside down offends many, prominently including veterans who fought for our country.

Like it or not, Mr. Obama will be the president of all of us until Jan. 20, 2017. We can fight him and hate him every day until then, or we can accept that he is our leader and ask our senators and representatives, Democratic, Republican and independent, to work with him to conquer vexing problems that face us for the betterment of our troubled nation. Compromise and breaking unrealistic campaign pledges will be necessary in order for this to occur. If the upside-down flag mentality is found to exist in Congress, then we are doomed.

The news accounts of which I am aware indicate that the upside-down flag "patriots" are middle-aged or older white men. I wonder if any of these "gentlemen" would have been inclined to engage in this form of protest if the president were a fellow Caucasian. I suspect not. What an embarrassment.
