The trust deficit

On Wednesday, Jon Huntsman spoke at the Robert Morris Speakers Series. He talked about deficits that America must address. One deficit is the trust deficit. Americans no longer trust their elected officials. Recent events show how both our elected officials and our media are adding to this deficit.

When members of Congress, without the facts, accuse our ambassador to the United Nations of lying, and when commentators, without any evidence, suggest that Gen. David Petraeus' resignation was forced in order to keep him from testifying about what he knew about the Benghazi debacle, they simply provide more fuel for conspiracy theorists and add to our trust deficit.

We need someone like Joseph Welch, who admonished Sen. Joseph McCarthy at the Army-McCarthy hearings saying, "... You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"
