The three branches

I enjoyed seeing retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor talking about her new book and the need to educate people about their government. A Fox News report said only two out of five people can identify the three branches of government.

I heard Justice O'Connor talk at Chautauqua, N.Y., several years ago on that subject. Afterward, I went up to three of the youngsters selling The Chautauquan Daily, the local newspaper, and asked them if they knew the three branches of government. A blond-haired boy offered, "Judicial." A dark-haired boy said, "Legislative." There was a long period of silence finally broken by the third young man, who pronounced with delight, "And the executioner!"
