Regarding the Feb. 17 Asides item on the editorial page about the Pittsburgh Pirates: The Pirates did not obtain Russell Martin in an off-season deal with the New York Yankees. Martin was a free agent, which means just that; he wasn't under contract with any team and could sign with any team that offered him a contract. The Pirates made the best offer, so he signed with them.
