This past weekend provided another wonderful example of why Pittsburgh is a very special place to live. It was the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.

Participation by both runners and spectators was phenomenal, with 25,000 runners from 49 states and 15 foreign countries participating in a variety of races and 60,000 spectators and 60 bands lining the 26.2-mile course encouraging the runners. About 100,000 people joined the finish-line festival at Point State Park. Neighborhood festivals were held in 13 communities during the race.

In addition, our runners raised more than $2 million for local and national charities while corporate sponsors provided the financial support that made the event possible.

The cooperation of city, county, state and transit officials as well as medical professionals and the media was remarkable, while a hardworking and dedicated staff led by race director Patrice Matamoros and aided by 4,000 volunteers once again showed why Pittsburgh is a city of many champions.
