The GOP must refocus away from social issues

Want to see why the Republican Party failed to regain the presidency? Just drive down Route 837 past Kennywood toward the Rankin Bridge. There you will see an oversized billboard sponsored by a Republican PAC that reads in large bold letters: "Barack Obama Supports Gay Marriage and Abortion. Do you?"

The country remains perpetually at war, the economy is weak, yet many in the Republican Party continue to play solely to its right-wing base by focusing heavily on social issues that paint all of its candidates, at least by association, as uncaring and intolerant.

It also doesn't help that people like Donald Trump and Sarah Palin often serve as spokespersons or that a bizarre cast of characters participated in the Republican presidential primaries.

Perhaps it is time for those of us in the center to take back our party! It would be a good move for the party and our country.
