The county executive makes a 'hartless' decision

I'm deeply disappointed in Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald's decision to cancel the holiday lights display at Hartwood Acres. ("Dim Finances Force Allegheny County to End Hartwood Holiday Display," Sept. 11).

Over the last two decades, my family and I have supported this charitable event at our county park while enjoying a highlight of the Christmas season. Though county council members and executives come and go, the Celebration of Lights has consistently brought joy to our world. Now after only nine months in office that have included raising our property taxes, proposing to raid the Regional Asset District tax and failing to handle the assessment mess, Grinch Fitzgerald can't find corporate sponsors to continue a yuletide tradition.

Where's Dan Onorato now that our county needs him? If things keep going this way, Mr. Fitzgerald might as well turn out the lights on his re-election prospects.
